Byron Bay Transfers — Festivals, Weddings and Airport Runs
A Private Transfer to Byron Bay
Byron Bay transfers with Unison are private: your group, one Mercedes, one driver, from Gold Coast Airport or Brisbane Airport to your Byron address, the festival gate or a hinterland venue. The price is fixed before you confirm and includes tolls.
Event Weekends
Byron's big weekends, the Byron Writers Festival across the township in August, Schoolies in late November, and hinterland weddings all year, bring road closures, full car parks and long shuttle queues. Byron Bay has no passenger rail: the last train left the Casino to Murwillumbah line on 15 May 2004, and the three kilometre solar train between the town centre and North Beach is a ride, not a route to an airport. A booked transfer means a driver already at the collection point at the time you name, and a vehicle with everyone's gear in it. See also North Byron Parklands transfers and Writers Festival transfers.
Weddings and Retreats
Guest transfers from Gold Coast Airport to Bangalow, Federal, Newrybar and the Byron valley, timed to the ceremony. Quiet arrivals at Crystalbrook Byron on Broken Head Road (the property formerly called The Byron at Byron), Elements of Byron on Belongil, Gaia Retreat & Spa out at Brooklet, and private retreats across the valley.
Routes and Prices
- Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay, about 68 km and 55 to 70 minutes, from $209 for a sedan (1 to 3 passengers) and from $259 for the V Class
- Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport, timed to your check in
- Brisbane Airport to Byron Bay, about 175 km and roughly 1 hour 50, quoted exactly when you book
- Byron Bay to Brisbane, airport, CBD or the cruise terminal
A job may start in New South Wales as long as it finishes in Queensland; trips that start and end inside NSW are not offered.
The Vehicle
The Mercedes Benz V Class seats up to seven with a full luggage bay: a boxed bike, surfboards or a weekend's camping gear fit. Child capsules, seats and boosters are fitted free before pickup. For one to three passengers a Lexus sedan runs the same route for less.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long is the transfer from Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay?
A: About 90 km and 55 to 70 minutes in ordinary traffic, down the M1 and off at the Ewingsdale interchange, which is the single road into town from the highway. School holidays, wedding Saturdays and the weekday morning queue at that interchange all add time, and the pickup is planned for the conditions on the day rather than the map.
Q: Do you do festival pickups after the last set?
A: Yes. You name the collection time and the driver is waiting at the collection point. If the set runs late, message the driver; waiting time is included for the first stretch.
Q: Can you carry bikes, surfboards or camping gear?
A: Yes. Tell us what you are bringing when you book and we confirm the vehicle before you pay.
Q: Are child seats available?
A: Yes, at no charge. Rear facing capsules, forward facing seats and boosters are fitted before we leave for your pickup.
Q: Is Byron Bay on a different time to Gold Coast and Brisbane airports?
A: For half the year, and it is the most common reason people miss a flight on this route. New South Wales observes daylight saving from Sunday 4 October 2026 to Sunday 4 April 2027; Queensland does not. Through that window Byron Bay runs an hour ahead of both Queensland airports. Every pickup is set against the airport clock and confirmed in writing.
Q: Is there a train to Byron Bay?
A: No. The last XPT left Murwillumbah on 15 May 2004, ending 110 years of rail in the region, and the Byron Bay line has been closed since. The solar train people ask about runs three kilometres between the town centre and North Beach; it is a ride, not a route to an airport. Coaches use the Butler Street interchange in town, which every bus service moved to in April 2021.
Q: Can you stop at the Cape Byron lighthouse?
A: Yes, and it is worth knowing how the parking works before deciding to drive yourself. NSW National Parks charges the top lighthouse car park by the hour and caps it at one hour per vehicle per calendar day; the lower car parks at Captain Cook lookout, Cosy Corner and The Pass are charged separately. A car that sets you down and comes back takes the clock out of the visit.
Q: Where in Byron do you pick up and drop off?
A: At the door, town centre, Belongil, Wategos, Suffolk Park, Broken Head, Ewingsdale, and the hinterland at Bangalow, Federal and Newrybar. Wategos is the one worth naming: a narrow, steep street inside the conservation area with metered parking, which is exactly where being driven beats driving.
Q: Do you pick up from Byron Bay hotels like Elements of Byron or Crystalbrook Byron?
A: Yes, and the fare is identical to any of them because it is priced on the trip rather than the address. Regular runs include Elements of Byron on Bayshore Drive, Crystalbrook Byron on Broken Head Road, Basq House on Fletcher Lane, Hotel Marvell on Marvell Street, Raes on Wategos, The Lord Byron, The Bower, The Sunseeker, Bask & Stow, 28 Degrees, Habitat, Reflections at Clarkes Beach, Soma at Ewingsdale, and both YHA hostels. Holiday houses and private rentals are no different.
Groups and Occasions
Most Byron bookings are a group with a reason and a deadline.
Schoolies transfers in late November are parent booked and driver verified: Gold Coast Airport or a Gold Coast hotel to a Byron address in a private vehicle, no unknown passengers and no shared van, with the confirmation going to whoever is paying.
Hens weekends and girls' trips travel in one car rather than three rideshares arriving ten minutes apart, down for the weekend, out to a hinterland lunch, and a driver waiting at the end of the night instead of a surge price on Jonson Street.
Wedding guest transfers run to Bangalow, Federal, Newrybar, Ewingsdale and through the Byron valley, timed to the ceremony rather than to a timetable, with return runs booked for the real end of the reception.
Retreat and wellness groups arrive quietly at Crystalbrook Byron on Broken Head Road, Elements of Byron on Belongil, and Gaia Retreat & Spa at Brooklet, which is a hinterland run rather than a town one, and priced that way.
Corporate teams and offsites fly into Gold Coast or Brisbane and travel on one booking and one invoice, flight tracked and met inside arrivals with a name board.
Parties of eight or more are the one worth being straight about. Our largest vehicle seats seven. Eight or more people travel in two cars that leave and arrive together, quoted as a single job. We do not operate a bus or a shuttle, and you will hear the honest vehicle count before you pay rather than after.
Byron Bay Hotels and Stays We Drive To
Give us the property name when you book and the approach, the kerb and the drop off point are worked out before the day. The fare does not change between them, it is priced on the trip, not the postcode.
Town centre and Main Beach. Basq House on Fletcher Lane, Hotel Marvell on Marvell Street, The Lord Byron at 120 Jonson Street, the Beach Hotel on Bay Street, Bask & Stow on Marvell Lane with its entry off Cowper Street, 28 Degrees Byron Bay on the corner of Marvell and Middleton, The Bonobo by Raes at 116 Jonson Street, Reflections Byron Bay at 1 Lighthouse Road opposite Clarkes Beach, and both hostels, YHA Byron Bay on Carlyle Street and YHA Cape Byron on the corner of Byron and Middleton. Jonson Street loading zones fill fast in summer, so where the street will not allow a door stop we take the nearest legal kerb and walk the bags.
Wategos and Cape Byron. Raes on Wategos at 6 to 8 Marine Parade and Raes Guesthouses at 1 to 3 Marine Parade. The Wategos descent is narrow and it is a no through road inside the conservation area. A seven seat V Class fits it; a coach does not, which is why the shuttle operators will not take you down there.
Belongil and the northern beaches. Elements of Byron at 144 Bayshore Drive, Wake Up! Byron Bay at 25 Childe Street, and Habitat Byron Bay on Porter Street. All three come off the M1 at Ewingsdale without touching the main street.
Bangalow Road and the southern edge. The Bower Byron Bay at 28 Bangalow Road, The Sunseeker at 100 Bangalow Road, and Crystalbrook Byron at 77 to 97 Broken Head Road on the Tallow Beach side.
Ewingsdale and the hinterland. Discovery Parks Byron Bay at 399 Ewingsdale Road and Soma Byron Bay at 221 Kennedys Lane, Ewingsdale. Hinterland driveways are often unsealed and unlit after dark, which is the case for naming the property rather than dropping a pin.
If your stay is not listed it changes nothing. We run to every address in Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Broken Head, Ewingsdale, Bangalow, Federal, Newrybar, Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby, holiday houses and private rentals included. Hinterland addresses off the sealed road are quoted exactly at the time of booking.
Getting to Byron Bay
Byron Bay sits in the far north east corner of New South Wales, about 165 km south of Brisbane and 34 km north of Ballina. Cape Byron, the headland three kilometres from town, is the easternmost point of mainland Australia, and its lighthouse is the most powerful in the country.
There is no passenger rail. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is the closest airport, roughly half an hour south, and flies only to Sydney and Melbourne with Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia, so an international arrival comes through Gold Coast or Brisbane and then by road. Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is the shorter run of the two; Brisbane is roughly an hour and fifty minutes.
Parking is the other half of the argument. Byron Shire Council runs pay parking in the Byron Bay town centre and at Wategos, and the whale migration season from May to November fills the headland. A booked car removes the parking question from a trip that is already short on it.
