The street that is the border, and the drive that gets you to it
Boundary Street does exactly what its name promises. Stand on it above Point Danger and the kerb on one side is Queensland, the kerb on the other is New South Wales, and the obelisk in the middle has been marking that line since 1866. That line is the whole reason this trip exists. People fly into Brisbane because the fare or the schedule suited them, then have to get themselves south past it: to a unit overlooking the Tweed River, a rented house at Fingal Head, a wedding at Kingscliff, a bowls weekend at Twin Towns, or a week of surfing Duranbah with three kids and too many bags.
Brisbane Airport to Tweed Heads is 107 km and a realistic 78 to 90 minutes. It is a Queensland pickup with a New South Wales drop off, which sits squarely inside our licence and is a run we do constantly.
The route: one motorway, then about five minutes of local roads
Out of the terminal it is the Gateway Motorway, over the Gateway Bridge, and south to where the Gateway feeds into the Pacific Motorway near Rochedale. From there it is the M1 the whole way: Loganholme, Yatala, Coomera, Helensvale, Nerang, Varsity Lakes, then the run past Currumbin and Tugun where the motorway tucks in behind Gold Coast Airport.
The interesting part is the last few minutes. The M1 does not run through Tweed Heads, it slides past it to the west, so the drive ends with a decision rather than a coast road. For Tweed Heads proper, Tweed Heads West and the Jack Evans Boat Harbour end of town, we come off at Kennedy Drive and drop down towards Wharf Street. For Tweed Heads South, Banora Point and the Tweed Mall side, it is Minjungbal Drive. For Fingal Head and Chinderah it is Tweed Valley Way and then the narrow road out past the cane flats. If your driver knows the town, the difference between those exits is five or six minutes and a lot of hesitation avoided.
Honest notes on timing. The 78 to 90 minute range assumes an ordinary run. Add fifteen to twenty minutes for a Friday afternoon, the end of a Queensland school term, or a morning arrival that lands you in the Loganholme crawl. Roadworks on the M1 between Varsity Lakes and Tugun have been a fact of life for years. We watch it and leave accordingly rather than promising you a number we cannot keep.
What the transfer costs
From $299 for the Lexus ES300h sedan, which seats up to three passengers with luggage. From $369 for the seven seat Mercedes V Class or Executive Vito Tourer, which takes up to seven. Those are per car, not per person, so a family of six in the seven seater pays one fare, not six.
They are from prices for a real reason: a drop at a canal house in Tweed Heads West is not the same job as a climb up to Terranora or Bilambil Heights, and the quote reflects where you are actually going. What the price already includes is the part people usually get stung on: tolls including the Gateway Bridge, airport access and parking fees, GST, flight tracking, the driver's waiting time, and child seats. There is no deposit, and you can cancel free at any time.
Why a booked car, and not the alternatives
Public transport between Brisbane Airport and the Tweed is genuinely poor, and it is worth being blunt about it. The best version is Airtrain into the city, a train down to Varsity Lakes or the tram to Broadbeach South, then a public service across the border, then a walk or a taxi to wherever you are staying. That is three changes, luggage on and off, and most of the afternoon gone. Land late and the last legs have thinned out or stopped entirely.
Hiring a car solves the geography and creates new problems: a long drive after a long flight, an agreement you should read closely before you take the car across a state border, and then a vehicle you have to park at a holiday house for a week and refuel before you hand it back.
A booked private car is one vehicle, one driver, your group only. We are never shared, and we do not run anything with a route or a timetable. You get met, you get put in the back, and the next thing that happens is your street.
Pickup detail that actually matters in the Tweed
Holiday house addresses out here are their own small challenge. Terranora and Bilambil Heights have driveways that drop away at an angle you would not attempt in a low car, and some of them are better handled by loading from the street. Banora Point has long battleaxe drives with the house invisible from the road. Around Tweed Heads West the numbering follows the canal rather than the street, and the letterbox is often the only clue. Tell us the gate code, the lock box, or simply "park on the road, we will walk down", and the driver plans for it before the day.
Early departures are the other Tweed speciality. A 7am flight out of Brisbane means leaving the Tweed around 4am once you allow the drive plus bag drop, and that is a booking we take every week without complaint.
Then there is the clock. Between October and April, New South Wales runs an hour ahead of Queensland, and this close to the border phones flip between zones on their own. We confirm your pickup in both, in writing, so nobody is standing on a driveway at the wrong hour arguing with a handset.
On the return leg, Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport, the direction is fine under our licence: a New South Wales pickup that ends in Queensland is exactly the trip we are permitted to run. Coming the other way into Brisbane, your driver parks and walks in, and meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board rather than texting you from a pickup bay. We track the flight, so a delay simply moves the booking. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting, domestic 45.
Travelling with children
We fit child seats free. Baby capsule, rear facing, forward facing and booster, fitted by your driver before he leaves to collect you, at no charge, ever, and never as an extra that appears at the end of the quote. Not one operator on this corridor markets that, and it is the single thing families tell us made the difference after a long haul flight into Brisbane with a toddler who has stopped negotiating.
Tell us ages and rough weights when you book and the right seats are in the car and checked. If you are a family of five or six with a pram and a week of luggage, take the seven seater rather than squeezing the sedan, and mention board bags when you book so we can put you in the right vehicle.
Questions we get asked about this run
How long does Brisbane Airport to Tweed Heads really take?
Between 78 and 90 minutes for the 107 km, almost all of it on the Gateway and the M1. Friday afternoons, school holiday changeovers and M1 roadworks can add fifteen to twenty minutes, and we build that into the pickup time rather than hoping.
How much is the transfer, and is that per person?
From $299 for the sedan, up to three passengers, and from $369 for the seven seat Mercedes, up to seven. Per car, not per person. Tolls, airport fees, GST, waiting time and child seats are already in it, and the from price moves with your exact pickup and drop off.
Can you take us back to Brisbane Airport from Tweed Heads?
Yes. We are licensed to pick up in New South Wales when the trip finishes in Queensland, so Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport is core work for us. It is only New South Wales to New South Wales that we cannot do.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing, from your side. We track the flight number and shift the pickup to the actual landing time. You get 60 minutes of free waiting after an international arrival and 45 after a domestic one, and your driver is inside the hall with a name board, not circling outside.
Do you really not charge for child seats?
Correct. Capsules, rear facing, forward facing and boosters are free and fitted before we collect you. Give us the ages when you book so the right seat is already installed.
Should I fly into Gold Coast Airport instead?
If the fare and the timing work, yes, and we will say so plainly. Coolangatta sits about ten minutes from Tweed Heads rather than an hour and a half. Plenty of travellers still land at Brisbane for international connections, cheaper fares or family reasons, and that is exactly when this transfer earns its keep. We cover both.
How do I book?
Call now or book online. No deposit, free cancellation any time, and a confirmation that shows your pickup time in both Queensland and New South Wales time while daylight saving is in effect.
